ImageMagick up to 6.5.x profile.c GetEXIFProperty numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick up to 6.5.x (Image Processing Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function GetEXIFProperty of the file profile.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

Integer overflow in the GetEXIFProperty function in magick/property.c in ImageMagick before 6.7.6-4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) via a large component count for certain EXIF tags in a JPEG image. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2012-0259.

The weakness was disclosed 06/05/2012 by Aleksis Kauppinen (Codenomicon) with Codenomicon CROSS Project as Bug CVE-201 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-1610 since 03/12/2012. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59371 (ImageMagick < 6.7.6-4 profile.c Heap-Based Buffer Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165490 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for ImageMagick (SUSE-SU-2012:0763-1)).

Upgrading to version 6.5.3-5 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12209.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (74657) and Tenable (59371). The entries 13218, 67522, 56096 and 56006 are pretty similar.
