fs/proc/base.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.39.4 does not properly restrict access to /proc/#####/io files, which allows local users to obtain sensitive I/O statistics by polling a file, as demonstrated by discovering the length of another user s password.
The issue has been introduced in 05/18/2011. The weakness was released 06/13/2012 with SuSE (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-2495. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation.
