The GNTTABOP_swap_grant_ref sub-operation in the grant table hypercall in Xen 4.2 and Citrix XenServer 6.0.2 allows local guest kernels or administrators to cause a denial of service (host crash) and possibly gain privileges via a crafted grant reference that triggers a write to an arbitrary hypervisor memory location.

The weakness was shared 09/05/2012 as 2012-09/msg00004 as confirmed posting (Maillist). The advisory is available at lists.xen.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-3516 since 06/14/2012. Local access is required to approach this attack. A authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370049 (Citrix XenServer Security Update (CTX134708)).

Applying the patch xsa18 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at lists.xen.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
