t1lib 3.0.x afmparse.c linetoken memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in t1lib 3.0.x. Affected by this issue is the function linetoken of the file afmparse.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in the linetoken function in afmparse.c in t1lib, as used in teTeX 3.0.x, GNOME evince, and possibly other products, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a DVI file containing a crafted Adobe Font Metrics (AFM) file, a different vulnerability than CVE-2010-2642.

The weakness was shared 11/19/2012 by Jan Lieskovsky as Bug 679732 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-0433. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75479 (openSUSE Security Update : evince (openSUSE-SU-2011:0279-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165487 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for t1lib (SUSE-SU-2012:0744-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (75479). The entry VDB-62986 is related to this item.
