Palemoon Pale Moon up to 12.0 xman fast_composite_scaled_bilinear numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in libpixman, as used in Pale Moon before 15.4 and possibly other products, has unspecified impact and context-dependent attack vectors. NOTE: this issue might be resultant from an integer overflow in the fast_composite_scaled_bilinear function in pixman-inlines.h, which triggers an infinite loop.

The weakness was published 01/31/2013 as Bug 910149 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1591 since 01/31/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/22/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69457 (SuSE 11.3 Security Update : libpixman (SAT Patch Number 8119)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166346 (OpenSuSE Security Update for pixman for a Stack Based Buffer Overflow (openSUSE-SU-2013:1421-1)).

Upgrading to version 12.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
