The dissect_sip_p_charging_func_addresses function in epan/dissectors/packet-sip.c in the SIP dissector in Wireshark 1.6.x before 1.6.13 and 1.8.x before 1.8.5 does not properly handle offset data associated with a quoted string, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a malformed packet.
The weakness was shared 02/02/2013 as Bug 8042 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugs.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-1577 since 01/30/2013. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64795 (SuSE 11.2 Security Update : wireshark (SAT Patch Number 7317)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166682 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for wireshark (SUSE-SU-2013:0322-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
