Linux Kernel 3.1 kernel/kmod.c __request_module input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel 3.1 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects the function __request_module of the file kernel/kmod.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The __request_module function in kernel/kmod.c in the Linux kernel before 3.4 does not set a certain killable attribute, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a crafted application.

The weakness was released 02/17/2013 (Website). The advisory is available at kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-4398 since 08/21/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70467 (Scientific Linux Security Update : Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 kernel update on SL5.x i386/x86_64), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Scientific Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350511 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAS-2013-233).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (70467).
