Firebird SQL Server up to 2.5.3 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in Firebird 2.1.3 through 2.1.5 before 18514, and 2.5.1 through 2.5.3 before 26623, on Windows allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted packet to TCP port 3050, related to a missing size check during extraction of a group number from CNCT information.

The bug was discovered 03/08/2013. The weakness was released 03/15/2013 (Website). The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-2492 since 03/06/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74929 (openSUSE Security Update : firebird (openSUSE-SU-2013:0496-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 24841.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82676) and Tenable (74929). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-192580, VDB-201820, VDB-220956 and VDB-220962.
