Wireshark up to 1.10.0 Netmon File Parser netmon_open memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Wireshark up to 1.10.0 (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function netmon_open of the component Netmon File Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

The netmon_open function in wiretap/netmon.c in the Netmon file parser in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.9 and 1.10.x before 1.10.1 does not initialize certain structure members, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted packet-trace file.

The weakness was published 07/29/2013 by Oliver-Tobias Ripka (Website). The advisory is shared for download at anonsvn.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-4934 since 07/26/2013. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71268 (Amazon Linux AMI : wireshark (ALAS-2013-251)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350493 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for wireshark: ALAS-2013-251).

Upgrading to version 1.8.1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (86027) and Tenable (71268). Similar entries are available at 5444, 5991, 5992 and 5993.
