of the file ui-summary.c of the component Filesystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in the cgit_parse_readme function in ui-summary.c in cgit before 0.9.2, when a readme file is set to a filesystem path, allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the url parameter.
The weakness was published 08/09/2013 by Jason A. Donenfeld (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-2117 since 02/19/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
