Use-after-free vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 and 9 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted web site that triggers access to an object that (1) was not properly initialized or (2) is deleted, aka "OnMove Use After Free Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 03/05/2008. The weakness was presented 09/21/2012 with iDefense Labs VCP as MS12-063 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-1529 since 03/08/2012. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. A authentication is necessary for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1661 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62223 (MS12-063: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2744842)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100127 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS12-063) (SA2757760)).
Applying the patch MS12-063 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12586.
