IBM WebSphere Application Server up to 8.5 Application Runtime path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in IBM WebSphere Application Server up to 8.5 (Application Server Software). This issue affects an unknown function of the component Application Runtime. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in IBM WebSphere Application Server (WAS) 6.1 before 6.1.0.47, 7.0 before 7.0.0.25, 8.0 before 8.0.0.5, and 8.5 before 8.5.0.1 allows remote attackers to overwrite arbitrary files via a crafted application file.

The weakness was published 09/24/2012 as swg21611313 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at www-01.ibm.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-3305 since 06/07/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62394 (IBM WebSphere Application Server 6.1 < Fix Pack 45 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123973 (IBM WebSphere Application Server Prior to 6.1.0.47 Multiple Vulnerabilities (swg21647522)).

Upgrading to version 6.1.0.45, 7.0.0.25, 8.0.0.5 or 8.5.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (77477) and Tenable (62394). auscert.org.au is providing further details. Similar entries are available at 5476, 5915, 6544 and 6546.
