Memcached up to 1.4.5 numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple integer signedness errors in the (1) process_bin_sasl_auth, (2) process_bin_complete_sasl_auth, (3) process_bin_update, and (4) process_bin_append_prepend functions in Memcached 1.4.5 and earlier allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a large body length value in a packet.

The weakness was released 12/12/2013 by infodox as 192 (Website). The advisory is available at code.google.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-4971 since 12/23/2011. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in Python. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71780 (Debian DSA-2832-1 : memcached - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195811 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Memcached Vulnerabilities (USN-2080-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (83915), Tenable (71780), SecurityFocus (BID 59567†), Secunia (SA56183†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-42448†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-66064 and VDB-66063.
