Wireshark 1.8.0/1.8.1/1.8.2 LDP Dissector memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Wireshark 1.8.0/1.8.1/1.8.2 (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component LDP Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in the dissect_tlv function in epan/dissectors/packet-ldp.c in the LDP dissector in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a malformed packet.

The weakness was presented 10/02/2012 by Laurent Butti as wnpa-sec-2012-29 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at wireshark.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the project team. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-5240 since 10/02/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62649 (FreeBSD : Wireshark -- Multiple Vulnerabilities (a7706414-1be7-11e2-9aad-902b343deec9)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121144 (Solaris 11.1 Support Repository Update (SRU) 3.4 Missing).

Upgrading to version 1.8.3 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wireshark.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (79011) and Tenable (62649). See 6094, 6581 and 6582 for similar entries.
