A vulnerability classified as critical was found in ISC BIND up to 9.6.x/9.7.6-P3/9.8.3-P3/9.9.1-P3 (Domain Name Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component named. The manipulation as part of a RDATA leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
ISC BIND 9.x before 9.7.6-P4, 9.8.x before 9.8.3-P4, 9.9.x before 9.9.1-P4, and 9.4-ESV and 9.6-ESV before 9.6-ESV-R7-P4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (named daemon hang) via unspecified combinations of resource records.
The weakness was shared 10/09/2012 with ISC as AA-00801 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is available at kb.isc.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-5166 since 09/26/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability can be exploited remotely against recursive servers by inducing them to query for records provided by an authoritative server.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 8 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71165 (AIX 6.1 TL 9 : bos.net.tcp.server (U855334)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350814 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for bind: AL2012-2015-017).
Upgrading to version 9.7.7, 9.7.6-P4, 9.6-ESV-R8 or 9.6-ESV-R7-P4 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at isc.org. It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting minimal-responses=yes
. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. All versions of BIND 9.2, 9.3, 9.4 and 9.5 are also affected, but these branches are beyond their "end of life" (EOL) and no longer receive testing or security fixes from ISC.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (71165). The entries 7079, 7502, 8108 and 9764 are related to this item.
