Apple CUPS 1.7.4 link following

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Apple CUPS 1.7.4 (Printing Software). This affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The web interface in CUPS 1.7.4 allows local users in the lp group to read arbitrary files via a symlink attack on a file in /var/cache/cups/rss/ and language[0] set to null. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2014-3537.

The weakness was shared 07/23/2014 by Salvatore Bonaccorso with Tor (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at cups.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-5029 since 07/22/2014. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77569 (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS / 12.04 LTS / 14.04 LTS : cups vulnerabilities (USN-2341-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350289 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for cups: ALAS-2014-438).

Upgrading to version 1.7.4 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (94805) and Tenable (77569). Further details are available at bugzilla.redhat.com.
