A vulnerability was found in IBM DB2 10.5/10.5.0.1/10.5.0.2/10.5.0.3 (Database Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component LOAD Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
IBM DB2 10.5 before FP4 on Linux and AIX creates temporary files during CDE table LOAD operations, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information by reading a file while a LOAD is occurring.
The weakness was presented 08/29/2014 as swg21681723 / 1681723 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at www-304.ibm.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-4805 since 07/09/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue. The advisory points out:
While running LOAD into CDE table, depending on the input source of the LOAD command (more details on this below), DB2 will create a temporary file containing the user data being loaded. The temporary file only exists for the duration of LOAD command, and is automatically removed on completion (both success and error). Thus, the vulnerability exists only temporarily.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77571 (IBM DB2 10.5 < Fix Pack 4 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases.
Applying the patch FP4 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ibm.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
The recommended workaround is: do not use the above mentioned input sources (i.e. PIPE, remote fetch, sourceuserexit , LOAD Client) for LOAD command into CDE tables. Alternatively, customers who are performing LOAD into CDE tables via the input sources mentioned above, ensure that no users share instance owner's group. That is, the instance owner group should contain only one user ID, the instance owner ID.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (95307) and Tenable (77571). See 69422 and 70800 for similar entries.
