A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Valve Steam Browser (version unknown). This issue affects the function LoadTGA
in the library vgui2_s.dll of the component URL Handler. The manipulation of the argument url_encoded_parameters
with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. From Wikipedia: "Steam is a digital distribution, digital rights management, multiplayer and communications platform developed by Valve Corporation". Steam, like other software, uses ist own URL handler to enhance experience by integrating web-based functionality directly in ist own platform.

The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Valve. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at revuln.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting Disable steam://
. A solution would be avoiding to pass command-line arguments to third party software and undocumented commands accessible from external and untrusted sources like the Internet.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (79280). scmagazine.com.au is providing further details.
