Zend Framework up to 2.3.2 ldap_bind NULL Byte improper authentication

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Zend Framework (Programming Tool Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ldap_bind. The manipulation as part of a NULL Byte leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-287. When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. The summary by CVE is:

The (1) Zend_Ldap class in Zend before 1.12.9 and (2) Zend\Ldap component in Zend 2.x before 2.2.8 and 2.3.x before 2.3.3 allows remote attackers to bypass authentication via a password starting with a null byte, which triggers an unauthenticated bind.

The weakness was presented 10/10/2014 by Matthew Daley as ZF2014-05 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at framework.zend.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-8088 since 10/10/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78786 (Fedora 21 : php-ZendFramework-1.12.9-1.fc21 (2014-12341)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350242 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for php-ZendFramework: ALAS-2014-460).

Upgrading to version 1.12.9, 2.2.8 or 2.3.3 eliminates this vulnerability. The vulnerability will be addressed with the following lines of code:

$password = str_replace("\0", '', $password);

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (97038) and Tenable (78786). Additional details are provided at seclists.org. See 67994, 71567, 73309 and 72979 for similar entries.
