Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Splunk Web in Splunk Enterprise 6.1.x before 6.1.4, 6.0.x before 6.0.6, and 5.0.x before 5.0.10 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via vectors related to dashboard.

The weakness was released 10/10/2014 as SP-CAAANHS / SPL-89216 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at splunk.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-8302 since 10/16/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:

This does not affect: universal forwarders. This does affect: search heads, heavy forwarders with Splunk Web enabled, and indexers with Splunk Web enabled.

It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79723 (Splunk Enterprise 6.0.x < 6.0.7 Multiple Vulnerabilities (POODLE)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.

Upgrading to version 5.0.10 or 6.1.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
