A vulnerability was found in Pidgin up to 2.10.9 (Messaging Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component untar. The manipulation as part of a Smiley Theme File leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
Absolute path traversal vulnerability in the untar_block function in win32/untar.c in Pidgin before 2.10.10 on Windows allows remote attackers to write to arbitrary files via a drive name in a tar archive of a smiley theme.
The weakness was released 10/22/2014 by Yves Younan with Cisco as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at pidgin.im. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-3697 since 05/14/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006. The advisory points out:
A bug in the untar code on Windows could allow a malicious smiley theme to place a file anywhere on the file system, or alter an existing file when installing a smiley theme via drag and drop on Windows.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78663 (FreeBSD : libpurple/pidgin -- multiple vulnerabilities (d057c5e6-5b20-11e4-bebd-000c2980a9f3)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167361 (OpenSuSE Security Update for pidgin (openSUSE-SU-2014:1376-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.10.10 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at hg.pidgin.im. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
Fix the untar code to ensure all paths are relative.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (97733) and Tenable (78663). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 68057, 68055, 68054 and 68053.
