A vulnerability has been found in FFmpeg 2.3 (Multimedia Processing Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
libavcodec/tiff.c in FFmpeg before 2.4.2 does not properly validate bits-per-pixel fields, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds access) or possibly have unspecified other impact via crafted TIFF data.
The issue has been introduced in 07/16/2014. The weakness was disclosed 11/03/2014 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind (j00ru) with Google Security Team (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at ubuntu.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-8544 since 10/30/2014. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 110 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82578 (FreeBSD : Several vulnerabilities in libav (2f75141c-da1d-11e4-8d32-5404a68ad561)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196036 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Libav Vulnerabilities (USN-2534-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.4 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (98502) and Tenable (82578). The entries 68318, 68321, 68322 and 68976 are pretty similar.
