The weakness was released 11/06/2014 as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-8626 since 11/06/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78895 (CentOS 5 : php (CESA-2014:1824)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 13085 (PHP Denial of Service and Code Execution Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 5.2.7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.php.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
