Microsoft Windows 2000, when running in a domain whose Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) is exactly 8 characters long, does not prevent users with expired passwords from logging on to the domain.
The bug was discovered 06/01/2004. The weakness was presented 06/01/2004 by Albatross as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0540 since 06/04/2004. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1566 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.microsoft.com. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 15701. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 31455.
