The management console on the Symantec Web Gateway (SWG) appliance before 5.2.2 allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary OS commands by injecting command strings into unspecified PHP scripts.
The weakness was disclosed 12/16/2014 by Egidio Romano with Secunia as SYM14-016 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at symantec.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-7285 since 10/02/2014. The exploitability is told to be difficult. The attack needs to be done within the local network. A authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1202 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit and been published 3 months after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. Upgrading to version 5.2.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19666.
