F5 BIG-IP 11.5.1 Application Security Manager cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in F5 BIG-IP 11.5.1 (Firewall Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component Application Security Manager. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in F5 BIG-IP Application Security Manager (ASM) before 11.6 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the Response Body field when creating a new user account.

The weakness was published 01/12/2015 by Peter Lapp (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-1050 since 01/15/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:

The F5 ASM is a web application firewall designed to protect web applications from attacks. It allows for a custom HTML page to be displayed to end users when they trigger a violation. The configuration page for the custom response contains a text input for HTML and a "Show" button that allows the editor to preview the page. This functionality is vulnerable to Cross Site Scripting.

A public exploit has been developed by Peter Lapp and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 217 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81597 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : ASM < 11.6.0 Response Body XSS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks. The advisory illustrates:

The HTML entered into the "Response Body" area is not sandboxed, which allows a malicious user to include JavaScript that would run in the context of the management console whenever a user clicks the "Show" button. The user could use XHR to bypass CSRF protections and perform commands on behalf of anyone that clicks the "Show" button.

Upgrading to version 11.6 eliminates this vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

The vendor indicated the patch would not be backported to previous versions.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (99907) and Tenable (81597). Similar entry is available at 68611.
