IBM WebSphere DataPower 2.1.x/8.5.x Server-to-Server Communication cryptographic issues

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in IBM WebSphere DataPower 2.1.x/8.5.x (Application Server Software). This affects an unknown code block of the component Server-to-Server Communication. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issues vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

The IBM WebSphere DataPower XC10 Appliance 2.0.0.0 through 2.0.0.3 and 2.1.0.0 through 2.1.0.2, when a collective configuration is enabled, has a single secret key that is shared across different customers installations, which allows remote attackers to spoof a container server by (1) sniffing the network to locate a cleartext transmission of this key or (2) leveraging knowledge of this key from another installation.

The weakness was shared 10/26/2012 as PM68296 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at www-01.ibm.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-5756 since 11/02/2012. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The code was fixed to make the secret configurable and encrypted for network transmission.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (79921). The entries 6878, 7010 and 7011 are related to this item.
