Linux Kernel 2.6.32 sysenter Emulator race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.32 (Operating System). This affects an unknown functionality of the component sysenter Emulator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The issue has been introduced in 12/03/2009. The weakness was released 01/27/2015 by Nadav Amit (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-0239 since 11/18/2014. The exploitability is told to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1881 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81192 (Fedora 21 : kernel-3.18.5-201.fc21 (2015-1657)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155284 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2015-3053)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (100597) and Tenable (81192). Further details are available at bugzilla.redhat.com. Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 69036 and 69190.
