lib/npm.js in Node Packaged Modules (npm) before 1.3.3 allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on temporary files with predictable names that are created when unpacking archives.

The weakness was disclosed 04/22/2014 by Daniel Kahn Gillmor (Website). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-4116 since 06/12/2013. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
