The Style Inspector in Mozilla Firefox before 17.0 and Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.11 does not properly restrict the context of HTML markup and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) token sequences, which allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript code with chrome privileges via a crafted stylesheet.

The weakness was shared 11/20/2012 by Mariusz Mlynski as MFSA 2012-104 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-4210 since 08/08/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 803348 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120702 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2012:1482)).

Upgrading to version 17.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at mozilla.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
