Use-after-free vulnerability in the BuildTextRunsScanner::BreakSink::SetBreaks function in Mozilla Firefox before 17.0, Thunderbird before 17.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.14 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (heap memory corruption) via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was published 11/20/2012 by Abhishek Arya (Inferno) with Google Chrome Security Team as mfsa2012-105 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-4218 since 08/08/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62979 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (d23119df-335d-11e2-b64c-c8600054b392)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165846 (SUSE Security Update to Firefox 17.0 and other Mozilla (openSUSE-SU-2013:0175-1)).
