A vulnerability has been found in HP Service Virtualization (Virtualization Software) and classified as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in CommunicationServlet in HP Service Virtualization 3.x before 3.50.1, when the AutoPass license server is enabled, allows remote attackers to create arbitrary files and consequently execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors, aka ZDI-CAN-2031.
The weakness was disclosed 06/18/2014 by Andrea Micalizzi (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at h20564.www2.hp.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-6221 since 10/21/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/22/2022). The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit in Ruby and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76284 (HP AutoPass License Server Remote Code Execution (HPSBMU03045)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.
Upgrading to version 3.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13414.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93768), Tenable (76284) and Exploit-DB (33891).
