ISC DHCP up to 3.0.1rc14 on Unix vsprintf memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in ISC DHCP up to 3.0.1rc14 on Unix (Network Management Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function vsprintf. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The DHCP daemon (DHCPD) for ISC DHCP 3.0.1rc12 and 3.0.1rc13, when compiled in environments that do not provide the vsnprintf function, uses C include files that define vsnprintf to use the less safe vsprintf function, which can lead to buffer overflow vulnerabilities that enable a denial of service (server crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code.

The bug was discovered 06/22/2004. The weakness was shared 06/22/2004 by Gregory Duchemin and Solar Designer (Website). The advisory is shared for download at isc.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0461 since 05/12/2004. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14160 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : dhcp (MDKSA-2004:061)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38289 (ISC DHCPD Hostname Options Logging Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 3.0.1rc14 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at isc.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (16476) and Tenable (14160). Additional details are provided at kb.cert.org. The entries 723, 33782, 33781 and 33780 are related to this item.
