Digium Asterisk up to 11.1.1 AMI main/http.c ast_http_get_post_vars Content-Length memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Digium Asterisk up to 11.1.1 (Communications System). This vulnerability affects the function ast_http_get_post_vars of the file main/http.c of the component AMI. The manipulation of the argument Content-Length with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple stack consumption vulnerabilities in Asterisk Open Source 1.8.x before 1.8.19.1, 10.x before 10.11.1, and 11.x before 11.1.2; Certified Asterisk 1.8.11 before 1.8.11-cert10; and Asterisk Digiumphones 10.x-digiumphones before 10.11.1-digiumphones allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) via TCP data using the (1) SIP, (2) HTTP, or (3) XMPP protocol.

The weakness was released 01/02/2013 by Walter Doekes and Brandon Edwards with Exodus Intelligence as AST-2012-014 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at downloads.digium.com. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-5976 since 11/21/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72054 (GLSA-201401-15 : Asterisk: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 42397 (Asterisk Multiple Denial of Service Vulnerabilities (AST-2012-014, AST-2012-015)).

Upgrading to version 1.8.19.1, 10.11.1 or 11.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at downloads.asterisk.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 25474.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (80921) and Tenable (72054). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 7231 and 7232.
