Signed integer vulnerability in libnasl in Nessus before 2.0.6 allows local users with plugin upload privileges to cause a denial of service (core dump) and possibly execute arbitrary code by causing a negative argument to be provided to the insstr function as used in a NASL script.

The weakness was presented 05/22/2003 by Sir Mordred and Renaud Deraison (Nessus.org) with Nessus.org as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2003-0372 since 06/04/2003. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10147 (Nessus Server Detection), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Service detection.

Upgrading to version 2.0.6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at nessus.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1102.
