LibVNCServer up to 0.9.9 rfbProcessClientNormalMessage data processing

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a data processing vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-19. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

The rfbProcessClientNormalMessage function in libvncserver/rfbserver.c in LibVNCServer 0.9.9 and earlier does not properly handle attempts to send a large amount of ClientCutText data, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption or daemon crash) via a crafted message that is processed by using a single unchecked malloc.

The weakness was released 12/15/2014 by Nicolas Ruff as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at ocert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-6053 since 09/01/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79203 (RHEL 7 : kdenetwork (RHSA-2014:1827)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168339 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for LibVNCServer (SUSE-SU-2015:2088-2)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (96190), Tenable (79203), SecurityFocus (BID 70092†), Secunia (SA61506†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-47118†).
