Ettercap 0.8.1 Dissector dissector_imap input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Ettercap 0.8.1 (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function dissector_imap of the component Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Ettercap 0.8.1 does not validate certain return values, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted (1) name to the parse_line function in mdns_spoof/mdns_spoof.c or (2) base64 encoded password to the dissector_imap function in dissectors/ec_imap.c.

The weakness was presented 12/19/2014 by Nick Sampanis (Website). The advisory is shared for download at obrela.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-9378 since 12/11/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by Nick Sampanis and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80340 (Fedora 21 : ettercap-0.8.1-2.fc21 (2014-17090)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123460 (Fedora Security Update for ettercap (FEDORA-2015-4009)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (99317), Tenable (80340) and Exploit-DB (35580).
