The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a xml external entity reference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-611. The product processes an XML document that can contain XML entities with URIs that resolve to documents outside of the intended sphere of control, causing the product to embed incorrect documents into its output. The server in IBM License Metric Tool 7.2.2 before IF15 and 7.5 before IF24 and Tivoli Asset Discovery for Distributed 7.2.2 before IF15 and 7.5 before IF24 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files or send TCP requests to intranet servers via XML data containing an external entity declaration in conjunction with an entity reference, related to an XML External Entity (XXE) issue.

The weakness was disclosed 05/20/2015 by Vincent Ruijter with Verizon (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at www-01.ibm.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-8924. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

Upgrading to version 7.2.2 IF15 or 7.5 IF24 eliminates this vulnerability.
