A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in VMware Workstation, Player and Fusion on Windows (Virtualization Software). The weakness was presented 06/09/2015 by Kostya Kortchinsky with Google Security Team as VMSA-2015-0004 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at vmware.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-2338 since 03/18/2015. Local access is required to approach this attack. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84150 (VMware Horizon View Client 3.2.x < 3.2.1 / 3.3.x < 3.4.0 / or 5.x < 5.4.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (VMSA-2015-0004)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115234 (VMware Workstation,Player,Horizon Client and Fusion Security Update (VMSA-2015-0004)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
