Race condition in the kernel in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2, R2, and R2 SP1, Windows 7 Gold and SP1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, and Windows RT allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application that leverages incorrect handling of objects in memory, aka "Kernel Race Condition Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2013-1278.
The weakness was released 02/12/2013 by Gynvael Coldwind and Mateusz Jurczyk with Google Security Team as MS13-017 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-1279 since 01/12/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64578 (MS13-017: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2799494)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90862 (Microsoft Windows Kernel Multiple Elevation of Privilege Vulnerabilities (MS13-017)).
Applying the patch KB2799494 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
