A vulnerability was found in Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager up to 12.1 (Anti-Malware Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component Management Console. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in the management console in Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) 12.1 before 12.1-RU6-MP1 allows remote authenticated users to read arbitrary files via a relative pathname in a client installation package.
The weakness was presented 07/30/2015 with Code White (Website). The advisory is available at symantec.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-1490 since 02/05/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication.
