Wireshark up to 1.12.6 WaveAgent Dissector packet-waveagent.c dissect_wa_payload input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Wireshark up to 1.12.6 (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function dissect_wa_payload of the file epan/dissectors/packet-waveagent.c of the component WaveAgent Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The dissect_wa_payload function in epan/dissectors/packet-waveagent.c in the WaveAgent dissector in Wireshark 1.12.x before 1.12.7 mishandles large tag values, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted packet.

The weakness was presented 08/24/2015 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at code.wireshark.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-6246 since 08/14/2015. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86156 (Debian DSA-3367-1 : wireshark - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124189 (Solaris 11.3 Support Repository Update (SRU) 1.5.0 Missing).

Upgrading to version 1.12.7 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (86156), SecurityFocus (BID 76381†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-52315†). See VDB-76766, VDB-76767, VDB-77418 and VDB-77419 for similar entries.
