Microsoft .NET Framework up to 4.6 Array Copy memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft .NET Framework up to 4.6 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component Array Copy Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2, 3.5, 3.5.1, 4, 4.5, 4.5.1, 4.5.2, and 4.6 improperly counts objects before performing an array copy, which allows remote attackers to (1) execute arbitrary code via a crafted XAML browser application (XBAP) or (2) bypass Code Access Security restrictions via a crafted .NET Framework application, aka ".NET Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability."

The weakness was released 09/08/2015 by Roberto Suggi Liverani (Rick) as MS15-101 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-2504 since 03/19/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85847 (MS15-101: Vulnerabilities in .NET Framework Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (3089662)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91091 (Microsoft .NET Framework Elevation of Privilege and Denial of Service Vulnerability (MS15-101)).

Applying the patch MS15-101 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (85847). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at 77632.
