A vulnerability has been found in FFmpeg 1.1.1/1.1.2 (Multimedia Processing Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function vorbis_parse_setup_hdr_floors
of the file libavcodec/vorbisdec.c. The manipulation of the argument bark_map_size
with the input value zero
leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in the vorbis_parse_setup_hdr_floors function in the Vorbis decoder in vorbisdec.c in libavcodec in FFmpeg through 1.1.3, as used in Google Chrome before 25.0.1364.97 on Windows and Linux and before 25.0.1364.99 on Mac OS X and other products, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (divide-by-zero error or out-of-bounds array access) or possibly have unspecified other impact via vectors involving a zero value for a bark map size.
The weakness was shared 01/11/2013 by Abhishek Arya (Inferno) with Google Chrome Security Team as vorbisdec: Check bark_map_size. as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.videolan.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-0894 since 01/07/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65819 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS / 12.10 : libav vulnerabilities (USN-1790-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165877 (SUSE Security Update for Chromium: Updated to 27.0.1425 (openSUSE-SU-2013:0454-1)).
Upgrading to version 25.0.1364.97 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 33265 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at patches.libav.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Upgrade to Google Chrome version 25.0.1364.97 or higher for Windows and Linux or version 25.0.1364.99 or higher for Mac to address this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82290) and Tenable (65819). Additional details are provided at code.google.com. The entries 7790, 7791, 7792 and 7793 are related to this item.
