Juniper Secure Access 6.3R6 SSL cryptographic issues

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Juniper Secure Access 6.3R6 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component SSL Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issues vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

The TLS protocol, and the SSL protocol 3.0 and possibly earlier, as used in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0, mod_ssl in the Apache HTTP Server 2.2.14 and earlier, OpenSSL before 0.9.8l, GnuTLS 2.8.5 and earlier, Mozilla Network Security Services (NSS) 3.12.4 and earlier, multiple Cisco products, and other products, does not properly associate renegotiation handshakes with an existing connection, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to insert data into HTTPS sessions, and possibly other types of sessions protected by TLS or SSL, by sending an unauthenticated request that is processed retroactively by a server in a post-renegotiation context, related to a "plaintext injection" attack, aka the "Project Mogul" issue.

The weakness was released 07/29/2011 by Martin as KB17534 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is available at kb.juniper.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-3555. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1600 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73566 (AIX OpenSSL Advisory : ssl_advisory.asc), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19563 (IBM DB2 9.7 Prior to Fix Pack 2 Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 6.3R7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (54158), Tenable (73566) and Exploit-DB (10579). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 4119, 4161, 11279 and 54592.
