The weakness was shared 11/11/2015 by Steven Vittitoe with Google Project Zero as MS15-116 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-6091 since 08/14/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86823 (MS15-116: Security Update for Microsoft Office to Address Remote Code Execution (3104540)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110261 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS15-116)).

Applying the patch MS15-116 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 21684.
