libpng up to 1.6.18 PNG Image png_set_PLTE/png_get_PLTE memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in libpng up to 1.6.18 (Image Processing Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function png_set_PLTE/png_get_PLTE of the component PNG Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple buffer overflows in the (1) png_set_PLTE and (2) png_get_PLTE functions in libpng before 1.0.64, 1.1.x and 1.2.x before 1.2.54, 1.3.x and 1.4.x before 1.4.17, 1.5.x before 1.5.24, and 1.6.x before 1.6.19 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a small bit-depth value in an IHDR (aka image header) chunk in a PNG image.

The weakness was released 11/13/2015 by Glenn Randers-Pehrson (Website). The advisory is available at ubuntu.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-8126 since 11/12/2015. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87015 (Amazon Linux AMI : libpng (ALAS-2015-611)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168929 (OpenSuSE Security Update for vlc (openSUSE-SU-2016:1652-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.0.64, 1.1.54, 1.2.54, 1.3.17, 1.4.18, 1.5.24 or 1.6.19 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (87015). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 80545, 81156, 81157 and 81158.
