D-Link DIR-816L Wireless Router up to 2.06 hedwig.cgi cross-site request forgery

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in D-Link DIR-816L Wireless Router up to 2.06 (Router Operating System). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the file hedwig.cgi. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross-site request forgery vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-352. The web application does not, or can not, sufficiently verify whether a well-formed, valid, consistent request was intentionally provided by the user who submitted the request. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:

Multiple cross-site request forgery (CSRF) vulnerabilities in the D-Link DIR-816L Wireless Router with firmware before 2.06.B09_BETA allow remote attackers to hijack the authentication of administrators for requests that (1) change the admin password, (2) change the network policy, or (3) possibly have other unspecified impact via crafted requests to hedwig.cgi and pigwidgeon.cgi.

The weakness was released 11/18/2015 by Bhadresh Patel (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-5999 since 08/14/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by Bhadresh Patel and been published even before and not after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

Upgrading to version 2.06.B09_BETA eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Exploit-DB (38707). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-9855, VDB-65497, VDB-73566 and VDB-117541.
