Apple Mac OS X up to 10.11.1 Kernel denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.11.1 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component Kernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The kernel in Apple iOS before 9.2, OS X before 10.11.2, tvOS before 9.1, and watchOS before 2.1 allows attackers to cause a denial of service via a crafted app, a different vulnerability than CVE-2015-7040, CVE-2015-7041, and CVE-2015-7042.

The weakness was published 12/08/2015 by Tarjei Mandt as HT205637 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-7043 since 09/16/2015. The exploitation is known to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue. The advisory points out:

Multiple denial of service issues were addressed through improved memory handling.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87321 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Updates 2015-005 / 2015-008)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 10.11.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (87321) and SecurityFocus (BID 78719†).
