The FontManager._get_nix_font_path function in formatters/img.py in Pygments 1.2.2 through 2.0.2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via shell metacharacters in a font name.

The weakness was disclosed 01/08/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bitbucket.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-8557 since 12/14/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1202.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87379 (Amazon Linux AMI : python-pygments (ALAS-2015-630)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124748 (Solaris 11.3 Support Repository Update (SRU) 5.6.0 Missing).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
